Taps are Automatic for the People at Coney Hal

Pegler Yorkshire is always on the look out for ways to help charities in a practical way, so when the National Autistic Society (NAS) approached the company looking for taps for their Coney Hall adult day centre in Croydon, the leading taps and fittings manufacturer was happy to help.

The NAS discovered they had a specific problem at Coney Hall, where they found the taps they had installed were just not appropriate for the client group – either through breakage or clients not understanding the motions of turning on or off the standard taps. This led assistant programme coordinator Steven Robertson to investigate getting a new taps installed that would make it easier for autistic service users to go about the routine of washing their hands.

Steven used the internet to try and find companies who would be able to help. This led Steven to the Bathroom Manufacturers Association (BMA) in the first instance, which in turn brought him to the attention of Pegler Yorkshire’s taps and mixers product market manager Mike Dickinson.

“Once I explained where I worked, Mike said he had an autistic son attending one of our services in Yorkshire” said Steven, “and very kindly indicated that Pegler Yorkshire would be able to donate some taps to the day centre at Coney Hall that would specifically suit our needs.”

Pegler Yorkshire has now supplied the NAS with 3 mains operated electronic taps, with the promise of more to follow as and when the NAS require them. The taps are part of the Visio Tek range – the 877v deck mounted taps now installed are the latest designs in the range and come complete with an 8 hour auto flush feature and are mains operated.

“We are delighted to have been able to help the National Autistic Society in this way,” said Pegler Yorkshire’s Mike Dickinson, “and we hope the Visio Tek taps donated will provide some practical assistance to the society and the autistic clients it serves. My own son Ross is Autistic, so I am well aware of the needs and challenges facing Autistic children and their families and the Society performs invaluable work in supporting adults and children alike.”

“Thanks to Pegler Yorkshire, we now have fully automatic sensor taps in the toileting and bathroom area which the service users find ideal to use,” continued Steven, “there is no need to turn on or off the actual tap, which has made a huge difference for the service users, and for the running of the centre itself.”

The NAS champion the rights and interests of all people with autism and aim to provide individuals with autism and their families with help, support and services that they can access, trust and rely upon and which can make a positive difference to their lives and day centre’s like Coney Hall are an important part of this service
