Flexseal, the global leader in flexible couplings, drainage and plumbing systems, has become a key contributor to the environmental sector, thanks to its role in the control and capture of methane emissions from landfills. Having supplied large diameter flexible couplings to landfill gas management companies throughout the British Isles and Europe, a variety of environmental, hygiene and security challenges are being easily and swiftly resolved.

Installed by leading environmental management services specialist, Irish Biotech Systems, Flexseal Extra Wide 1400mm diameter couplings have been used to cap and prevent methane gas escaping from leachate chambers used to monitor contaminated water level in the base of each cell of waste. Not only has the sites’ safety been dramatically improved as a result, the gas has been prevented from escaping and causing an environmental hazard and odour nuisance. The couplings also make it easier to extract, flare or utilise the gas at a later date.

Garret Fallon, MD at Irish Biotech Systems explains: “Gas collection systems at landfills are designed to prevent the escape and migration of methane and other gases into the atmosphere or into other structures. They present various risks of hazards and can continue to do so for up to 50 years.

“Flexseal Large Diameter couplings provide an ideal solution for such systems, as they form a leak proof seal and are readily removable to allow the chamber to be maintained. They also assist in enabling the gas to be recovered for flaring or to be developed as an alternative energy source when required.”

Garret adds: “Flexseal couplings are also capable of maintaining a seal even during large ambient temperature changes which can cause the diameter of the plastic chamber to change quite considerably.”

Providing the most extensive range of couplings available in the marketplace, Flexseal large diameter couplings are the ideal choice for projects that require bespoke fabrication. They were especially selected for multiple landfill projects in order to form a capping joint and provide a gastight connection. Flexseal rubber bushes were also used to provide an infallible seal where a stepped joint was required.

Commenting on its role in landfill management, Flexseal’s Marketing Manager, Ed Fairfield said: “Flexseal is always at the forefront of industry developments and we are delighted to play an active role in landfill gas management practices.

“We produce the largest range of flexible couplings in the marketplace and our ability to manufacture to suit individual customer requirements has seen the sales of these products increase significantly,” concludes Ed.

Established in 2008 and based in County Kildare, Ireland, Irish Biotech Systems provides a ‘one stop shop’ approach to the environmental management of modern waste management facilities. Over the years, the company has gained significant recognition for the provision of environmental services and specialist knowledge in the field of landfill gas management in both public and private waste sectors.
